Grammar Rules That Can be Broken

April 26th, 2011

There are situations when we feel the need to put across an idea that is better communicated by employing grammatical tools that are normally used in other more appropriate instances. This may not work in every situation, but by using a more conversational tone in your writing, you can lend a certain charm to your articles.

There are many ways you can do this. One way you can do it is by making use of ellipsis. Ellipsis usually gives a conversation a casual feel (E.g. Hey…how do you do…). Such devices are commonly used in text messages. It can also be used to express different shades through the text.

The parenthesis and the dash are two similar devices you can use to add a more informal tone to your copy. Both tools can be used to impart a different idea in a sentence, something which makes a sort of underlying comment to the reader. It sets a thought apart in relation to a sentence that you would not want the reader to overlook.

Another tactic that can be employed is the use of slang and informal abbreviations in the writing. An example would be ‘info’ for information or ‘biz’ for business. But take into account the audience that you are writing for, as it may not be appropriate in all situations. Certain readers may not take the variation in tone lightly.

Using the above mentioned devices can certainly be a good addition to your list of copywriting tactics. Only be wary of overusing them so as not to have your readers make a quick exit from the site. Getting a cheap article writing service to get the job done may just be a good idea.
